I thought my final year project was over after graduation. Instead, I came back as an engineer, helped build a wheelchair-accessible flight simulator, and showcased it at Europe's biggest airshow where Red Arrow pilots and astronaut Tim Peake tried it out.
As if the results of my final year project couldn't be better, I've had the honour to have my final year project awarded the IED award of excellence. An award so prestigious only a a dozen out of the thousands of engineering students in the UK ever get it.
This is the story about how I developed the control software for a flight motion platform. In essence it's a flight simulation rig that uses a innovate platform singlehandedly developed by the university which eventually led to a very fun epilogue.
November 22nd 2024. It was cold and rain-soaked. After two intense days competing in the Automation Engineering WorldSkills competition against 37 others, my teammate and I stepped into a warm, formal ceremony to hear the results. That’s where we were awarded the National Gold medal. This is how it happened.
